comparison

Compare / contrast works by TWO writers we have studied. You will be making comparison/contrast to find thematic and /or cultural connections and oppositions.  Towards this end, you need to have a central theme.  Consider one of the following:

  • · The roles of men and women in early American Puritan society
  • · Puritan ideas and philosophy, and their influence on American writing
    • o Particularly in the role of seeing metaphors in everyday life and therefore in their writing
    • o And/or discounting and opposing the experiences of those they encountered.
  • · Eurocentric and Indigenous peoples encountering one another

[You are free to find your own or adapt these, but these are the ideas we’ve been exploreing}
Outside sourcing:  This is not a research paper, but the use of 1 or  2 outside sources will be helpful. Use no more than 2 outside secondary sources, and cite them correctly.  I strongly suggest you use the library databases available at library.scsu.edu.  Your goal in using research is to add breadth and depth to your paper, not to substantially reproduce what outside critics have said.  That is to say, you are looking for the idea or quote that you can expand on for your own purposes.
Your ideal audience is an audience of English educators, so you should ask not only how one of the suggested themes above is demonstrated by the literature, but how the cultural touchstones you use can help make them clear.
In the list below, you can use two writers from above the double line, but not two writers from below the double line.  That is, do not use two post revolution writers.
