CASE STUDY:

 E.R. is a male  20 year old college student attending on a partial merit scholarship at an out-of-state university. He competes on a club sports team at his school and has a “serious” girlfriend who also lives on campus.  Even as an adolescent he was thought of as smart, creative, and perhaps quirky. He has maintained a high GPA during his first four semesters; however,  there have been several changes in his thinking and behavior that have caused alarm. 

He claims that over the previous summer working for the Parks Department at a National Forest as a fire lookout,  he came in contact with “aliens” who communicate to him telepathically—these aliens have directed him to change his course of major so that he might better represent these visitors when they do in fact completely reveal their presence in the near future.   Now  five months later, he describes himself as their Prophet, and has changed his manner of speaking and dress to affect such–frequently standing in the college quad to preach of the coming reveal of the alien presence among us.  At first many thought and dismissed this behavior as a joke or long con, or perhaps a political protest.   But no—he was convinced that the communication that heard in his head is  clear and meaningful, and ongoing.  His girlfriend  pleaded with him to stop and had even contacted his parents to get involved.  However, he began to appear as “The Alien Prophet” in his classes and would interrupt instruction, while “channeling” the instructions that the aliens provided; however this channeling was just a spew of rambling and disorganized speech. He has now twice been removed by campus security. The second time he became rigid and had to be carried to  Student Health for counselling. These actions have only escalated his insistence and resistance.   Because of the altercation with campus security, the university has threatened to remove him from the dorms,  hold his scholarship in abeyance, and  force a leave of absence until his behavior changes.  Otherwise,  other authorities will become involved.    In lieu of arrest and the Baker Act,  E.R.’s parent have since intervened to arrange for private care.
