Select one of the case studies that were part of this session’s assigned reading. Write a 2-3 page paper that responds to the questions posed at the end of the case study. Please also include in the case study paper what you have personally learned from the case study that you could directly apply in your current or future position in the health care field (or other job) as well as how a biblical worldview would impact this application. Case Study:Tiffany was a go-getter who had recently earned her undergraduate degree in Health Administration and wanted to get her career started. She had volunteered for a year or so at Big City Hospital and, after her graduation, was brought on as a part-time employee through a temporary hiring agency. Today, Tiffany was informed that the temporary position she had held would be converted to a full-time hospital position, and her supervisor encouraged her to apply. This was it; the dream could be realized if she were able to procure this position. Tiffany was excited about the opportunity and in a timely manner submitted her application.Tiffany waited for the interview to take place and, as she did, she became more and more complacent about the process since she was already employed by Big City Hospital. After all, she knew almost everyone on staff in her department, and she had worked or volunteered there in some capacity over the past few years. She began to feel as if the interview was a mere technicality on her way to a challenging and rewarding career. Finally, a couple of months after the application deadline, Tiffany received an interview packet that outlined what was expected of her during the process. Instead of reading the packet completely, Tiffany decided to ask coworkers about their experiences and, based on their advice, she would formulate her own interview plan. Tiffany felt that she could not lose this job since some of her current coworkers and friends would be on the hiring panel. However, Tiffany missed the information in the interview outline that indicated there would be several staff members from other departments on the committee as well. Since Big City Hospital was so large, Tiffany did not know everyone in the facility, so it would be crucial for her to follow the guidelines in the interviewing packet. On the day of the interview, Tiffany showed up with all of the confidence in the world, as she felt certain that the job was hers to lose. Instead of dressing professionally, Tiffany wore her best “Friday” jeans and showed up for the interview disorganized. Once she entered the room and noticed many individuals that she had never met, she became visibly shaken and worked to play catch-up the rest of the afternoon. Because she had not prepared for the interview as the outline had required, she was unable to answer several questions that were asked of her and she also was not prepared to present to the committee on her strengths and weaknesses as they applied to the new position. The committee completed the interview and dismissed Tiffany for the day.
As days turned to weeks, Tiffany became more and more nervous about why this was taking so long and her ability to land the job. Finally, five weeks after the interview, Tiffany was notified that she did not get the position and that her temporary job would end in two weeks. Tiffany was devastated and couldn’t understand why she wasn’t chosen. Her coworkers who sat on the panel attempted to explain to her what had happened, but she refused to accept any of the blame, as she believed that she was the best candidate. Ultimately, Tiffany left the facility on bad terms and is still searching for a job today.
Discussion Questions1. As a hiring manager or a member of the hiring committee, what key issues do you think led to Tiffany’s inability to land the job?
2. Why, in your opinion, would it have been beneficial for Tiffany to be successful in this process? Look at this question as a current member of the Big City staff.
3. Imagine for a moment that you were Tiffany. What would you have done differently to prepare for the interview? What do you think Tiffany did right?
4. As a member of the committee, what rules and regulations do you think apply to your position as a voting member of the hiring group? For example, Civil Rights Act, American with Disabilities Act, etc.
5. In the end, what can be done to prevent these types of circumstances from occurring? Does the employer have a responsibility to prepare the candidate for the interview? Is it fair to external candidates if they do?
