 In his TED Talk, David Chalmers discusses the nature of consciousness.  His discussion touches on computers and the question whether a computer could have conscious experiences.  Various science fiction writers have explored the possibility of computer consciousness, especially in relation to computers with complex, sophisticated hardware and software.  Do you think it is possible for a computer to be conscious?  That is, is a computer the kind of thing that could have conscious experiences?  Why or why not?  If you think that a computer could be conscious, do you think it’s possible for a computer to exercise free will and/or have ethical rights?
