Assignment:
The materials you have covered this week call for time and reflection considering the issues of injustice which perpetuate deep and abiding inequities in our society. In 2009, M. Ratts proposed social justice as a fifth paradigm in counseling psychology. Further, in Ratts et al. (2011) suggested new social justice competency standards be implemented for counselors. In 2013, the American Psychological Association called upon all undergraduate training programs to provide students with the opportunities to research and reflect upon ways psychology can help to address these social justice issues, both locally and on a global level. With this in mind:
- Describe the social justice paradigm and how this fifth force changed the counseling/psychology field.
- From the social justice competency article, discuss how you can integrate social justice/advocacy/action principles into the work you are planning to do. Consider which social justice needs and/or populations you feel called to serve and why addressing social justice is important to you as a professional based on what you have learned regarding social justice. (Use the short video that is assigned for the week as a guide for how to turn social justice towards advocacy and action).
- From a social justice perspective, consider how these principles intersect with faith and/or spirituality, and then explain how social justice fits within the framework of servant leadership.
