ESSAY TITLE: Between 1865 and 2021, did America become a more free place or a less free place?

· At least 3 primary sources (from our in-class readings) cited using footnotes.
o *Note: you can use the editor’s introductory info from the primary sources, but it does not count toward your required amount of primary source citations. Make sure you’re clear on what parts of our primary source readings are editor’s notes and what parts are the actual primary source
o Your primary sources should be chosen from 3 different weeks of the class—the goal is to make comparisons across different time periods.
Papers will be graded out of 100, according to this rubric:
- Presence and quality of an introduction, including a thesis statement (10 points)
- Depth of your argument (15 points)
- Clarity (15 points)
- Presence and effective use of at least three different primary sources (15 points)
- Organization of paragraphs and the paper as a whole (20 points)
- Grammar (15 points)
- Presence and quality of a conclusion (10 points)
The Structure of a Paper
Introduction
Gives some background for the topic at hand, introduces us briefly to the evidence you will use, and must contain the thesis!
Thesis
An evidence-based, debatable answer to the question being asked.
Body paragraphs
Each body paragraph should aim to begin with a topic sentence, which serves as the introduction to the paragraph. The sentence should state the piece of information the rest of your paragraph is about.
Each body paragraph should contain at least one quote and/or paraphrase
Conclusion
Your conclusion should restate your evidence, restate your thesis, and possibly speculate on why the question is important
