Assessing the “Gentle” or “Intentional Method of Parenting as a Means to Engender Better Self-Regulation and Diminish Potential Future Delinquency/Criminality

Information

Family environment is, for nearly every human being, a predominant element that affects emotional and psychological well-being, individual decision-making, and social behaviors through the stages of life.  Within this framework, parenting style is a determining factor in children’s development and life outcomes (e.g., Alavi & Ramezani, 2021; Cho & Braaten, 2021; Mosier, 2022; Simons & Sutton, 2021).  How much so merits a review of a notable emerging theory and application. For this assignment, in the context of criminal behaviors and/or unjust experiences, we examine the contemporary discussion on the “gentle” or “intentional” style of parenting.

As children, you have all experienced some level of parenting and will likely take on the important parent role in the near future (if not already).  It behooves each of us to gain a detailed understanding of parenting practices and apply the best approaches to raising emotionally and psychological self-regulated offspring.

Towards that objective, please assess the philosophy and logic of the information presented within the recent 35-minute podcast on “The Promises of ‘Gentle Parenting

(Links to an external site.).” on the April 6, 2022 edition of the 1A -WAMU program on National Public Radio (NPR). The panelists for this podcast are Jenn White (1A – WAMU host, journalist, podcaster), Mercedes Samudio, MSW (licensed social worker, parenting coach, author), Mona Delahooke, Ph.D. (child psychologist, author), and Destiny Bennet (parenting coach, blogger, author).

Please note that this is a brief discussion among well-versed individuals.  You may likely need to locate other sources that provided expanded information in the subject area to gain a more complete comprehension.

, the “gentle” or “intentional” method of parenting does or would yield more emotionally and psychologically well self-regulated individuals and significantly diminish the potential for juvenile delinquency and/or adult criminality?

7) The relevance of parental “self-care” to effectively applying “gentle” parenting methods.

8) What do you see as some of the oversights or limitations in (largely well-meaning) parenting that can result in emotionally and/or psychologically affected offspring?  Perhaps include relevant personal or vicarious experience(s) that positively or negatively affect personal development in relation to self-regulation and behaviors.

9) How do you perceive your penchant and capacity to parent, in the context of daily life struggles/challenges, in ways to prevent or resolve emotional and psychological issues in your children that can develop in more problematic behaviors in their lives?  Are you likely to resort to rooted fear/anger-based generational methods or toward “gentle/intentional” approaches?  Why/why not?
