Asian American Short Questions

Throughout this class we have investigated the Asian American experience through various “Keywords.” This cumulative open book final exam tests your knowledge on these words and how they relate to Asian American history and their experience. Five keywords will be chosen from the following units: Immigration and Race; Genealogies of Knowledge and Activism; War, Trauma, and Home; and Empire and the Pacific.

Answer the following questions about the keywords in short answer format in complete sentences. Be as detailed and specific as possible. Each question is worth 4 points and the entire exam is worth 20 points. You will be graded on the following for each question:

  • Define the keyword (1 points)
  • Historicize the keyword in relation to the Asian American experience (2 points)
  • Include a quote from one in-class reading from the same unit as the keyword that exemplifies your definition and understanding of the keyword (1 point)

Please answer the following questions: 

  1. Exclusion: How was the exclusion of Asian Americans institutionalized in the 19th century? Provide an example.
  2. Orientalism: What is the theory of orientalism and who first coined the term? What were the prevailing orientalist stereotypes on Asian Americans in the 19th century? 
  3. Movement: What were key tenants of the Asian American Movement? How does the Asian American Movement continue to impact Asian American communities today?
  4. Refugee: How does the figure of the Southeast Asian American refugee decenter immigration as a master narrative in Asian American studies? 
  5. Empire: Analyze the following cartoon (i attached it) as it relates to American empire in the Pacific. How does this cartoon exemplify U.S. empire and how did this impact the development of Asian American communities?
