Acticle summary

Pick an article from a Sociology academic Journal in the Library, that pertains to our class. There are many sociology academic journals, so you should have plenty to choose from. Pick a topic regarding sociology and search for it in our library’s academic journal database. If you are wondering what topic you should pick, skim through your textbook to find a topic that interests you, and then focus on that.

It must be a Sociology academic journal article: There are many Sociology Journals, which are published books of work that include many articles. You are finding one article in an academic journal to summarize.

Further instructions on finding academic journal articles:

  1.     Go to the library online, click the research tab, select Databases, and pick ‘academic search complete’. Once in this database you’ll need to refine your search:
  • Pick full text, and scholarly peer reviewed journals
  • Pick advanced search and type a term in the box that applies to our class, and in the next box type in Sociology and then pick ‘subject terms’ field
  • You will then be directed to results, probably in the thousands, but you’ll want to refine your results
  • On the left-hand side there are options, you need to make sure to pick:
    • Source type – academic journals
    • Publication date – 2008 – 2020 (you want it to be in the last 10 years but I like to include a little buffer)
    • Language – english (unless you are fluent in another language, and can read it)

Take notes while reading on: The purpose of the article, the research methods, and the findings.

Organization for paper:

In the introduction you introduce the the main concepts. In the body part of the paper, you discuss the main concepts in detail; this includes discussing why the author(s) decided to research this topic, and the research methods. Each concept should have its own paragraph. The conclusion should include a brief overarching summary of the article and what you’ve learned from reading it. You must include a works cited at the end.

2 page minimum. Times New Roman Font. Double Spaced. Regular margins.

Note: You want to stay away from using gendered pronouns when referencing the author. You should refer to the author by their last name, or ‘the author’. You also don’t want to give value judgments about the findings. I don’t care if you agree. You are only to summarize.
