Accents in the college/university settings: Influence on Student Learning & Attitudes

Research Survey Paper (40 points)

Work on your research survey paper due April 11, 11.59 pm. Below are the details.

Topic: Accents in the college/university settings: Influence on Student Learning & Attitudes

Method: Do an extensive literature review online and/or through the library databases such that you are only using peer-reviewed, credible sources (not Wikipedia, online journals, websites etc.). Your goal is to survey research studies done on the topic of students or teachers/professors/instructors having an accent. Specifically, survey the literature to see what has been reported on the influence of accents on students’ learning. Also, look at what has been reported on the attitudes and biases that students and/or instructors may have about accents that further goes into impacting their learning.

After doing a thorough literature review, and pulling up those journal articles, go through those articles to outline and briefly summarize their findings. You can write up these findings either as an essay or a list of bullet points, but be sure to be comprehensive and thorough in making sure you have looked everywhere extensively. Also, making sure you have accurately summarized the article’s main finding. (e.g., 43 freshmen in Alabama, monolingual speakers of English, were found to rate their college professors poorly on course evaluations based on the accent (Peters, 2013)).

Personal Reflection: Include a concluding section in your paper where you can reflect on the impact on you of what you learned by discovering these studies. What difference, if any, does it make to your own learning, attitudes, or effort in and out of class as you deal with diversity and accents.

Organization: Include these sections in your paper:

Title

Purpose

Literature search (can be further divided into sections based on your findings)

Personal Reflection

Bibliography (this is where the references go: e.g., Smith, W. A. (2011). Title…journal..page no. and hyperlink url).

Other details:

This should be at least a 10 page paper, and include at least 10 references. Research this question thoroughly until you personally feel satisfied you have covered the ground well and looked at sufficient studies to compare and contrast. Feel free to email me any questions you may have. When completed, you can submit the article on BB in the space provided.

I do not need this in APA format—this is more of a content paper, so I’ll ignore stylistics differences. But be sure to cite the references completely at the end, and include hyperlinks where available.
