Argue and Persuade Writing Assignment
Part 1:
Now that you have learned about the craft moves of argue and persuade writing. It is time for you
to write one of your own. For this assignment, you will write OR present an audio recording of an
argue and persuade essay that is 500-800 words double spaced. Please make sure to use MLA
citation format for any information or quotations that you get from anywhere else.
Your essay must:
➢ Have a clear opinion
➢ Use at least TWO embedded quotations from reliable sources
Required Annotations (use comment function to add):
➢ Label THREE examples: 1 ethos, 1 pathos, 1 logos
➢ Label THREE narrative craft moves
Topic: Choose a topic that is close to your heart, and that won’t require hours of research for you.
Please remember this is mostly a WRITING exercise, not a research project. You are welcome to
use any of your quickwrites or activities from class (the G.O.A.T of Sport) as a starting point for
your final piece.
Your assignment can be serious or comedic, sarcastic or genuine. It is up to you! I just want to
see that you can CONVINCE me to see things your way.
There are TWO ways to present your argument:
You may choose to present your work as a recorded or live PERSUASIVE SPEECH. You will
submit your HIGHLIGHTED essay and WORKS CITED.
OR
You may choose to present your work as a WRITTEN PERSUASIVE ESSAY. You will submit
ONLY evidence of ETHOS, PATHOS and LOGOS and your WORKS CITED.
Criteria
Content:
Writing/Speech has a clear opinion supported by well developed, logical, and
accurate points. Thinking /10
Organization:
Writing/Speech is organized in a way that best showcases the writer’s/speaker’s
point and keeps the reader engaged. It is clear that the writer has made thoughtful
decisions about how to develop their opinion. Thinking /10
Style:
Writer/Speaker experiments with a variety of craft moves to add emotional appeal
and impact to their writing. Writer employs skillful syntax and diction, uses varied
sentence and paragraph length, and develops a consistent tone.
Communication/Application /10
The voice of the writer/speaker carries the reader along and is consistent,
well-developed, and fits the tone of the piece. Strong and engaging opening and
closing.
Communication/Application /5
Correctness: Writing is polished to avoid errors of spelling, grammar, and
punctuation. Writing/Speaking is clear. Communication /8
MLA Citations: Writer properly embeds quotations with citations and correctly
formats Works Cited list.
