  • How do biases develop, and what role does enculturation play in this process? Be sure to define bias and enculturation.
  • What kind of person develops biases? Does having biases make you a bad person? 
  • What did you learn about your own biases, and how does this knowledge affect your life as you go forward?

2. Principles of Diversity Education

  • What are the three components of Diversity Education? Name and define them. 
  • Imagine that you are are a teacher in an early childhood classroom. Give an example of how you would implement each of the three principles of Diversity Education. You can talk about activities, classroom, setup, how you’d speak to the kids, etc. Just be sure that your answer demonstrates an understanding of the principles. Be specific.

3. Ethnocentrism, Culture and Teacher’s Racial Identitiy. 

  • Define ethnocentrism. What are three examples of how ethnocentrism might come up for a teacher working in a diverse community?
  • What is cultural humility and what does it have to do with ethnocentrism?
  • What did you learn in this class about how a teacher’s own racial identity might affect the way that they relate to the children in their care in a preschool setting? Be specific and refer back to the source of your knowledge.

4. Aggression

  • What are the three types aggression that you learned about this semester? Define each one and give an example.
  • What does the research that you learned about tell us about how “educational” media play affects aggressive behavior? Be specific and tie back to the source of your learning.

5. Gender

  • What are three specific takeaways about the development of gender identity in children? Focus on early development of ALL kids rather than focusing on transgender kids of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Refer back to the source of your learning. 
  • Give three ways that your knowledge would affect how you interact with children, set up the environment, etc.

6. Disability

  • What was your biggest takeaway from the disability module?
  • If you were setting up a classroom and had a child in a wheelchair in class, what are three specific things ways that you would implement diversity education in the environment, interactions, activities, etc? Be sure that your answers are based on what you learned in class. 
  • Give an example of how we can use “you noticed” language to talk about disability.

7. Internalized Isms and Microaggressions.

  • What is an internalized ism? Give a clear example. 
  • What are microaggressions and why are they so harmful? Give 3 examples that might happen in an early childhood classroom if a teacher has not done the work of becoming aware of (and owning) their own biases and isms. 

8. Equity and Equality

  • Define equity and equality.
  • We can’t be both equal and equitable at the same time. As Intentional Diversity Educators, we favor one over the other. Explain which one it is and why it is preferred. 
  • What is one way that you have seen me implement the preferred approach (equity or equality) in this class. 

9. Speaking to Children

  • What are three things that people need if they are to change their minds and let ho of ingrained attitudes according to Ricky Sherover Marcuse’s Working Assumptions for Unlearning racism?
  • If a child made a comment (“that smells gross”) about another child’s food, how would you use “you noticed” language to talk to the child about it?
