The instructions on what is needed and required for the essay assignment
- An introduction that explains what case you are analyzing, why it is a good case to look at, what you will argue in your analysis, and a road map (plan) for the rest of the paper
- The body of the essay should cover: Background information (1-2 pages)
- The criminal event (what happened, to who, when, the law that was broken),
- Broad details of the case (e.g. arrest, trial, sentence)
- intersectional analysis (2-3 pages):
- Define intersectionality
- What role did race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, class, etc., play in your case? If you are discussing a dimension not traditionally considered in the analysis of intersectionality, make a case for why you think it should be considered.
- When appropriate, your intersectional analysis should consider the role of intersectionality in how the crime was conducted, how victims were selected, how the criminal justice system responded to the crime, and how the media covered the crime.
- How does your case help us to understand power relations in Canada? What can we, as a society, learn from it?
- Did your case include a remedy for any discrimination, or did it perpetuate it?
- Include evidence from other scholarly sources, as well as details about the case from other sources, to support your argument
- A conclusion that summarizes your argument and evidence
- A list of references — alphabetical, single-spaced in Chicago author-date format

The purpose of this essay is to not only discuss the criminal case in itself but also to discuss the flow of the Criminal Justice system, discuss how the case was treated, what led to the trial, what promoted or inspired it and what societal traits are involved like racism or elitism.
