LA1-B
This LA option involves doing some research on either Johannes Kepler or Galileo
Galilei. As a Group you are to prepare an essay on either one of these two early
astronomers who lived around the same time. The essay should be at least 2000 words.
This is a formal essay and, as such, it must contain an introductory paragraph outlining
the major aspects of the piece, various content paragraphs with detailed information, a
summary paragraph and a complete bibliography. Use footnotes or endnotes as you
wish.
The essay must contain personal information about the person (a brief life story), the
contributions he made to astronomy and/or science in general and the impact he had on
the development of astronomy. Accomplishing this as a group could be challenging, as
the essay must not be just a series of individual writings pieced together; rather, the
essay must be coherent demonstrating a single writing style. As a suggestion, one
person should take responsibility as the writer, another for researching the personal
history of the astronomer, another for pulling together the scientific contributions, and so
on. I’m sure you’ll work it out. This LA choice is also worth 15% of your final course
grade.
