Determining the Best Resources
A certain caliber of resources must be sourced and used to ensure that the team answers the PICO question effectively. The best resources to use when researching medical queries must be peer-reviewed and evidence-based materials. There are specific online databases dedicated to cataloging such resources for research purposes. Some of the most reputable databases include PubMed, which contains millions of reputable journal articles in their original form; the Journal of the American Medical Association, which has reputable medical information; and the National Center for Biotechnology Information, which advances science and health research. Furthermore, when sourcing evidence-based practice guidelines, numerous websites are dedicated to providing guidelines, including the National Guideline Clearinghouse and the National Quality Measures Clearinghouse (The National Institute on Disability, 2012).
Key Terms Used in Researching the PICO
The key terms used in the research of the PICO question were derived from the question. The PICO question was;
In patients diagnosed with dementia in the long-term care setting, how does the use of a comprehensive falls assessment prevention plan that includes restraint alternatives compare with the use of a fall prevention protocol that includes the use of restraints affects the number of falls that occur?
Given the question above, the key terms used in the research were; falls among dementia patients, fall prevention plans, restrains in fall prevention plans, alternative fall prevention plans.
Resources
The team utilizes the PICO format resource to understand and address the problem. Other resources necessary to complete the evidence-based project include practice guidelines, systematic reviews, and literature databases (Abbott & Studer, 2022).

Researching and Recommending Evidence-Based Resources to Support Clinical Decision Making
In this discussion forum, you will consider a clinical question of interest and determine how to locate evidence-based resources to support clinical decision making.
Scenario: You are a part of an interprofessional team working on an evidence-based practice project to look at falls in patients with dementia in the long-term care setting. The team was brought together in response to a noted increase in the incidence of falls in residents with dementia over the past three months. One of the recent changes prior to the increase in falls was a mandate to no longer use physical restraints on residents. In speaking with several staff members, they feel the use of restraints is a must, and they do not have time to keep up with using the restraint alternatives that have been suggested. They also feel they do not have enough time to continuously check on residents. This has caused major issues of concern and has compromised the quality and safety of the residents.
As the team comes together to meet, one of the first items that is discussed is the clinical question. The team uses the PICO question format to develop the following question: In patients with a diagnosis of dementia in the long-term care setting (P), how does the use of a comprehensive falls assessment prevention plan that includes restraint alternatives (I) compare with the use of a fall prevention protocol that includes the use of restraints (C) affect the number of falls that occur (O)?
In your response, address the following questions:
- Determine the best resources to use when conducting a search for evidence regarding this issue. Consider these questions: What databases would be most appropriate? Where would you locate clinical practice guidelines that could be utilized in the EBP process for this issue?
- Conduct a search using the resources that you identified above. What were the key terms that you used?
- From your search, identify at least three resources that you would consider using in an EBP project, such as the one described in the case scenario. If possible, suggest resources that meet the highest level (Level I) of evidence. Why would these sources be most appropriate in determining best practices and support clinical decision making for this issue?
Read other students posts and comment on at least two posts that recommended resources different from those you selected. Conduct a search using the resources and key terms identified in their posts. Describe how the search results using their criteria differed from your original results, including the quality and quantity of resources the search retrieved. In your reply, share any questions or considerations their responses provoked for you on the topic Use your personal experience, if it’s relevant, to support or debate other student’s posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support opinions.
Your peer responses should be a minimum of 150 words each. One reference is required for peer responses.
Discussion Board Directives:
Participation in all discussions is imperative to learning in this forum. You are expected to participate in the discussions and make postings on a MINIMUM of two separate postings per week: Initial post to the discussion board is due by Wednesday at 11:59 pm PST. Initial post must be a minimum of 200 words. Your 2nd & 3rd discussion postings (peer posts) should be thoughtful responses to peers and are due by Sunday 11:59pm PST. Peer posts must be made on separate days from one another.Peer posts must be a minimum of 150 words each.
Salutations, headings, citations, reference list is not part of your word count. Your word count is based on the content of your response.
Initial discussion board post requires two credible references (APA 7th edition) to be cited to support your response. One must be a peer reviewed article. A minimum of one reference is required for your peer responses.
When replying to a posting on the discussion forum, you are to respond to the person by salutation, name and refer their comments in the posting.
To add value to your response, you must give an example of what the prior post had described, provide a different perspective of the topic posted, or expand upon the idea posted in the message by including more detail and depth.
