interview with elder

COVID-19 NOTE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, you should now conduct the interview as a phone call or virtually via Skype, WhatsApp, Zoom, etc.

For the elder interview, you need to select an older adult (age 65+) to conduct an interview with and summarize that interview in a three-page report. Be sure to seek the person’s permission to do the interview and explain that it is a class project. Inform the individual that: (1) the person can do the interview anonymously; (2) that the person does not need to reveal any information that he/she does not feel comfortable talking about; and (3) that the person can end the interview at any time. Plan to spend about an hour with that person conducting the interview.

The final paper should be approximately three pages in length and should be organized in a question and answer format using 12-point font, 1-inch margins (without indenting text and the use of bullet points) and single spacing. Be sure to remove these instructions from your final paper.

During the interview:

  • Be polite, open and friendly.
  • Avoid closed ended questions (e.g., “Are you happy?”)
  • Use open-ended questions whenever possible (e.g., “Tell me about your health?”)
  • Use prompts (e.g., “Can you tell me more?”)
  • Do not lead the witness (e.g., “You must have been angry when…?”)
