For this assignment, you will write a 600+ word essay in which you examine a slang term/phrase or a popular saying in English. You should include information about its introduction into the English language, its usage(s), changes it has undergone over the years, and any cultural aspects or connections.

Although this essay is a more formal assignment, you can take a less formal tone (optional) when composing it; this decision is based on, of course, your topic choice. You will want to put some time and research into selecting your slang term/phrase or saying as it will make writing the essay more successful and fun. The essay is meant to give the context of the term’s/phrase’s/ saying’s meaning, not just reword a rote definition, and you should use examples to express your point where appropriate.

There is no one way to structure and develop the essay, but I would suggest you ask yourself, “what do I want to communicate to the reader about this term/phrase/saying?” The answer will help you develop your thesis. Also, the nature of your topic may suggest a logical pattern for development. In general, I’m suggesting the 5-paragraph essay structure may not work well with this kind of essay.
