The Paper
Introduction: WRITE LAST, SKIP FOR NOW.
First Body Paragraph: Background: Set the stage. Provide some context for understanding the primary sources you are going to use. This is where should discuss your JSTOR article, you can use a shortened version of the “title” but you need the author’s full name (henceforth you will refer to the author by the last name). What is the author’s main argument? How does it shed light on your primary source? Or- how does your primary source help us better understand the topic.
Second Body Paragraph: Subtheme #1 Using both the primary and secondary sources give several specific examples of subtheme #1. Your primary sources should provide the meat for this paragraph, which will examine one aspect of your topic.
Specific Example/Analysis/Specific Example/Analysis
Third Body Paragraph: Subtheme #2. Ditto
Fourth Body Paragraph: Subtheme #3 Ditto
Conclusion: Wrap it up. What do these sources tell us about the world at this time? How do they help us understand some aspects of this time period?
Now that you have finished the paper and you know where it is going write the Introduction:
1. Topic Sentence sets the stage by introducing your primary source(s) topic, time period, place and actors if necessary.
Ex: In 1944 the United States held an international conference at Bretton Woods in an attempt to lay out a plan for the post-war economic and political world.
2. Give other important background information regarding your primary sources but remember that you will do this again in paragraph two so don´t overdo it. Just remember that your reader knows nothing. Then answer the following question: why is this event/person/movement/relationship/response/ example/etc. significant? what makes it significant? Does it highlight some aspect, illustrate the importance of, or demonstrate the relationship between two or more factors?
