The article “How Did Health Care Get to Be Such a Mess?” talks about how health care is always changing because of different insurances. The article explains that insurance increased the price and care goes down. In the early 20th century, a new structure was introduced called the the prepaid doctor group. During this time, people had to pay a monthly fee to a physician group and not a separate insurance group. Physicians would earn a base salary and this led to losing patients and providing unneccesary care. Another insurance that was described in this article is the A.M.A. which created the insurance company model. Insurance companies had to pay physicians for using fee for service compensation. In 1965 congress noticed all of these different insurances failing so that is when Medicare was created. After Medicare was created, the demand for health services increased and medical costs became a national crisis.

After reading this article I really don’t have a side in whether I agree or disagree. I liked the idea of the prepaid doctor group model and you would get treated in one location from physicians across from many specialities and you would pay the physican group directly. Although this model seemed like it would work, this led to a decrease in quality care with patients. I believe that insurance policies are constantly changing and many people want a healthcare reform. The article explains if a reform were to happen then legislators would have to cut down on regualtions to allow market innovation outside of the insurance company. This also is a reminder to explain that having a reform would not be the easiest thing to do.

This article relates to our textbook because our text explains before 1965 private health insurance was the only available source of payment for health care. Our article explains in 1965 Medicare was introduced and this helped to meet the medical needs of the elderly and low income people. Our text summarizes the health care industry in the United States has came a long way and evolved into the largest industry. Our text also explains the Affordable Care Act fails to provide affordable coverage to millions of people even though the number of people who are uninsured has decreased (Shi & Singh, 2019). Therefore, there is still a lot to be done in order to provide everyone with affordable health care.
