The Politics of International Business

In this project, over the semester you will develop a 6-8 page paper exploring a single way in which politics is related to your primary discipline. Some details:
The substance of this project will vary tremendously from major to major, and student to student, but here are some examples of ways you might relate politics to your major:Are there known difficulties in your prospective industry, such as low wages, poor job security, unsafe work environments, etc? Are there organizations in your field, such as unions or professional organizations, who advocate on behalf of these workers? How do these organizations operate and organize? Are they successful?Do existing government regulations make it hard for certain aspects of your field to function? Could existing laws be modified to make it easier to innovate, or produce certain goods in a different way, or at lower costs? Or do you believe a certain kind of regulation is necessary for improving your field, but does not yet exist? For instance, could subsidizing research into a promising new technology help advance your field?Do those who work in areas related to your major tend to lean towards a particular partisan or ideological group? What explains why this preference exists? How long has it been this way? Are these relationships likely to remain over time, or change in some way?
Once you have chosen an angle, you will write a 6-8 page paper on this topic. This will be an argumentative essay, in which you will make a clear claim that you support throughout the paper. You might, for instance, write in favor or opposition to a regulation that impacts your field, or offer an explanation for why people in your field tend to associate with particular political parties/groups/candidates, or propose a way to improve your field through political or legal action. Even if you choose to spend a majority of paper explaining a political or technical aspect of your field, you should ultimately try to find a way to take a clear position to make the paper argumentative.

The intro paragraph will include:An interesting hook to grab the reader’s attention.A brief explanation of the political aspect of your field you are choosing to focus on.A clear thesis statement in which you take a position on how your discipline should respond   to the political challenge you’ve identified.A clear road map that tells the reader in a sentence or two what content your paper will cover to support that thesis statement.

I told my professor that my paper would be on “The international business community should handle travel restrictions by working online and outsourcing for in-person-only jobs.” but if you want to change the topic that’s fine, it just has to be on the politics of international business. This is an American government class so it doesn’t have to go extremely in-depth about the business aspect. If you have any questions or just want clarification on anything please don’t hesitate to text (321) 339-4091.
