  2. Final Paper Guidelines The purpose of this paper is to illustrate your knowledge about U.S. state politics and your ability to critically analyze various aspects of state politics.  More specifically, you will compare and contrast Missouri state politics to two other states.  While making this comparative analysis, you should integrate themes and concepts that were discussed in lecture and in assigned readings, thus, contextualizing similarities and differences of the nature of Missouri state politics compared to two other states of your choice.  Papers that do not integrate core concepts and demonstrate command of the course material will, at best, be ‘C’ papers. Papers are to be 6 pages. Criteria:
    • Class readings and lectures should serve as the foundation of your comparative analysis.
    • Choose one political institution and one policy to discuss state differences and similarities.
    • Integrate state economic, geographical, and cultural contexts to assess state differences throughout the paper.
    • Incorporate theories and concepts discussed and read about from class to assess differences.
     Format:
    • Your paper should be 6 pages in length, double spaced, not including your reference section Times New Roman font, with one inch margins.  Note that 6 pages (the minimum length) should not be 5 ½ or 5 ¾ .  Also, DO NOT use gimmicks to artificially ‘lengthen’ your paper such as placing spaces between paragraphs.
    • The sources should be reputable and academic—not popular culture magazines or newspapers (unless you are setting it in the context of discursive debate regarding policies or political actors in states). Wikipedia is not a reputable source—do not use it as a source, though it might point you to other sources that are reputable. The websites MUST be academic, public agency, or government websites.
    • DO NOT write any words or ideas in your paper that are not your own unless you cite. DO NOT include full book titles or article titles in the body of your paper as a citation method.  Use a common style such as APSA, MLA, APA, or Chicago and include your reference list (which does not count as part of the page length criteria)
