MAP DESIGN PROJECT (using arcgis software)
The final project is designed for you to demonstrate what you have learned this semester regarding spatial analysis, data creation/collection, cartographic communication and ArcMap user skills. Your assignment is to choose a potential crisis that could affect the security of the homeland. You will be asked to choose a location for your analysis somewhere within the NY, NJ, PA region.
You will produce a professional quality map, a written documentation of your analysis and map design process, and present the project to the class.
In your write-up you will describe all the elements that went into your analysis and design including the “tools” (geocoding, buffer, intersect, selection method, etc.), “science” (projection, scale, grids, coordinate systems, etc.) and the “art” (color, texture, audience, viewing conditions, etc). You will describe who your expected audience is, the format and medium of your map and the location in which you expect your map to be found.
Goal:
– design a map from concept to completion
Objective:
– to demonstrate skills in spatial analysis and data creation/collection process
– to demonstrate advanced user skills of ArcGIS
– to demonstrate knowledge of mapping and cartographic design principles
– to analyze and design a geospatial solution to a crisis that could affect the security of our region
Grading:
20% = spatial analysis
10% = data collection/creation
15% = cartographic quality
20% = written report
15% = presentation
20% = homeland security applicability
Deliverables:Written documentation of the homeland security issue you’ve chosen, the spatial analysis, data creation/collection, design process and decision process that went into the solution(s) you’ve composed (3-5 pages). You can use the following
