Essay Three: Catchy Title

Argument Overview: [Title ofArticle/Book Chapter]

Here is where you will summarize the article’s side or stance on the issue and explain the controversy. I would recommend using direct quotes from the article whenever possible. Include the title, author, and the article’s location. Mention the Claim (and type) of the article and the stance it takes on the controversial issue. Again, be as objective as possible when summarizing the controversy and the arguer’s stance. Please mention the title of the source, the author’s name, and the location of source.

Finally, express your own claim in the form of “The argument in the article is overall strong/weak because…[brief reasoning as to why you found it to be strong/weak].” The next sections of the essay will involve you proving/showing why you thought so and analyzing the evidence/support, etc. from the article to prove your own claim (that the arg. was strong/weak).

Here’s a checklist for this section:

  • Explain the issue or point of controversy.
  • Provide the article’s/book chapter’s title, the author’s name, and the location of where it was published.
  • Give a summary of the article and express the argument’s stance on the issue.
  • Explain the claim and claim type using a direct quote from the article.
  • Express your own claim about the argument (“The argument found in the article was overall strong/weak because…”).

Evaluation ofArgument

Here is where you will explain whether you found the argument in the first article to be overall strong or weak and why you thought so based on your analysis of the argument in it. You should include your analysis of the two examples of support from the article, as well as discussion of slanting, fallacies, the article’s audience, and the author’s ethos as well as the ethos of the location of the article. I would recommend using direct quotes from the article to strengthen the discussion.

Here’s a checklist for this section:

  • Discuss two types of evidence/support found in the article/book chapter. Use at least one direct quote for one or the other (or both, ideally).
  • Discuss an example of slanting.
  • Discuss at least one fallacy found in the article/argument.
  • Explain who the target audience is based on elements from the argument itself or outside information pertaining to the author, the location of the article/book chapter, or other means.
  • Discuss the ethos of the author and the location of the argument (where published). Use an outside source to help with this discussion.
  • Make sure to put the key Writing 2 terminology in bold, so it is easy to find your analysis of each of these elements.
  • Don’t forget to express how each of these elements supports your claim that the argument is overall weak or strong.
