  4. What type of organizational structure? (Vertical tall, vertical flat, team, etc. – centralized authority or decentralized)
  5. What is your position and where does it fit in the organization’s hierarchy?
  6. How long have you been in management?
  7. What are your primary responsibilities as a manager?  What, if any, responsibilities do you have other than management?
  8. (By percentage) how do you spend your day?
  9. What are your favorite responsibilities?
  10. What are your least favorites?
  11. What are the biggest challenges you face as a manager?
  12. How do use technology or how has technology impacted your job as a manager?
  13. How is employee morale at your company?  Why?
  14. How do you motivate your employees?
  15. Does your company provide any management training?  If so, what areas are covered?
  16. How often do you meet with your employees – one-on-one and as a group?
  17. Have you ever had to terminate an employee?  If so, does your company have a formal procedure (ex. First warning, probation, termination).  What are some of the reasons for which you have had to terminate an employee?
  18. What is the focus of communications from your manager and upper management?  (ex.  We need to improve customer service, increase productivity, etc.)
  19. Do your employees have goals?  If so, individual, team or both.  How are goals set (does upper management set goals; do you; or do you involve the employee in the process)  How are employees rewarded if goals are met?
  20. What is the biggest change you would make in your company if given the opportunity?

Part 2:

Based on the results of your interview, in a paper not to exceed 5 pages, discuss your findings about the organization and the manager as related to the principles we have learned.  Specifically, it should include but not limited to the following:

·         Planning – How are goals and plans made and rewarded within the organization?  The manager’s role and responsibilities in planning and goal setting?  What changes would you recommend to improve effectiveness, if any?

·         Organizing – What type of organizational structure?  Centralized vs. decentralized authority?  Use of teams?  The organization’s culture?  The manager’s role in the organization and responsibilities related to organizing?  What changes would you recommend, if any and why?

·         Leading – What leadership traits did you observe in the manager?  What support or training does the company provide to foster leadership?  What functions does the manager perform as a leader?  What changes would you recommend to improve the manager’s effectiveness as a leader?

·         Controlling – How does the company and manager monitor employees, performance, results, etc and provide feedback?  Bureaucratic control vs decentralized control?  The use of technology?  What changes would you recommend?

·         Does the manager appear to be well suited for his/her (1) current position and (2) higher positions and why or why not?  Other recommendations for the organization and the manager.

·         What were the major things you learned from this exercise?
