For this assignment, you will take what you’ve learned about the rhetorical situation, rhetorical appeals, etc. and apply them to a primary source of your choosing. The goal of a rhetorical analysis is to investigate how a particular artifact is using rhetoric to appeal to and/or influence an audiencein order toachieve a purpose.
Students are to select a piece that was composed for an audience, identify that audience, and analyze the methods which the composer used to appeal to that audience. Primary source selections include but are not limited to:
- published texts (2-4 pages)
- web texts (7-14 paragraphs)
- web videos or audio recordings (2-5 minutes)
This analysis might require inference. Students should include evidence for their claims and, where appropriate, explain how the evidence supports their analysis. For example, the evidence you choose can specifically relate to your primary source, can more broadly discuss the genre of your primary source, and/or can discuss the rhetorical appeals you identify in your primary source.
