Conflict Analysis Paper

Conflict Analysis PaperConflict is ubiquitous. Successful, or even satisfactory management of conflict is sought after in many areas of everyday life. On the levels of intrapersonal, interpersonal, group/organizational, and public communication, conflict can be disastrous, or it can lead to vastly improved results– when we learn from analyzing other previous conflicts.Purpose                                                                                                                                                                The purpose of this paper is to develop your conflict analysis abilities from different theoretical perspectives. In this course, we have compared two major perspectives on conflict: the cognitive perspective and the interactional perspective. Each of these perspectives include different theories that help analyze conflict. These theories help us to understand how conflict develops and to explain the choices people make when they communicate in conflict situations. Objectives                                                                                                                                                           This assignment asks you to:1. Demonstrate your understanding of the two different perspectives (cognitive and interactional) and their associated theories;2. Examine peer-reviewed research on conflict; and3. Demonstrate your ability to use the cognitive and interactional theories of conflict to analyze a conflict situation and offer your insightsRegarding Secondary ResearchSecondary research is any material you locate in a library, database, publications, or media. This assignment requires that you use four authoritative sources,  which include a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources, and two authoritative professional sources (news report/professional report).A good way to go about this is to use the FIU library (www.myfiu.edu.)Go to Students > Library > Research: Start. From there, you can search the databases using key terms. Search for peer-reviewed articles, videos, and books in the FIU collection (hard copies or eBooks). There are many excellent sources on conflict in the databases, book collection, and educational videos.  If you need help, just contact the library. There are contact phone numbers on the FIU Library site. The Assignment Process 1. Think of a conflict–it could be a conflict in a family, work, friendship, organizational, national, or global context. Choose the conflict based on two criteria: a) you know a considerable amount about how the conflict unfolded and b) you are interested in analyzing the conflict in more detail. Choose ONE of the cognitive theories and ONE of the interactional theories and analyze the conflict using the two theories.  Cognitive Theories• Verbal aggressiveness • Psychodynamic Theory • Attribution Theory • Arousal/Deficit Theory Interactional Theories• Coordinated Management of Meaning • Confrontation Episodes Theory • Reciprocity Theory2. Provide an overview of the conflict itself (approx. 1-2 pages). Provide enough background to establish a basis for understanding your application of the two theories you have selected. 3. Apply one Cognitive Theory to your conflict (approx. 1-2 pages). How does the theory help to explain what happened? What insights does it provide about why people acted/communicated the way they did in the conflict? How does it help explain the outcomes of the conflict? Be sure to use the theory in detail, drawing from the specific insights the theory offers. 4. Apply one Interactional Theory to the same conflict (approx. 1-2 pages). How does this theory help to explain how the conflict unfolded? What insights does it offer about why people acted and communicated the way they did in the conflict? How does it help to explain the outcomes of the conflict? Again, be sure to draw from specific details and points in the theory. 5. Conclude with a brief comparison of the insights that the contrasting theories offered. Which was most useful? Why? Explain why you perceive your selected theories to be most useful (one theory from a cognitive perspective and one from an interactional perspective. (approx.1-2 pages) Evaluation Requirements ChecklistA successful paper will have:o A clear examination of the conflict management perspectives and theorieso A clear examination and synthesis of 4 sources on conflict, of which:o A minimum of 2 sources must be peer-reviewed from academic journalso 2 sources may be from published news reports/professional organization reportso Clear integration of theories, terminology, concepts from textbook chapter readingso Correct APA style, with in-text citations, references page.
