Connecting Educated to a Related Article (winter 2022)

1.     Your final draft should be at least 2.5 pages typed in 12-point font and with correct MLA format (which includes double-spacing).

·       Refer to our supplemental materials on how to format your essay in MLA style.

2.     Use NO outside sources, only the book itself and the article you’ve selected (don’t look online for anything, or you will be unhappy with your grade).

3.     Focus on just one main point you want to make that’s related to child labor or sibling abuse.

4.     Use a logical three-part structure to develop your ideas:  Introduction, body, and conclusion (beginning, middle, end). This means that your essay will have at least three paragraphs, but the middle section will need multiple paragraphs.

·       Refer to our supplemental materials on essays.

5.     Include a brief, accurate summary of your article (one of the two I’ve provided, only).

·       Study and use our supplemental materials on summarizing and applying strategic reading strategies to find an article’s main idea, organizational structure, and supporting details.

6.     Include at least one excellent short quotation from the book AND at least one excellent quotation from the article that help you explain the points you are making.

·       Refer to and USE our supplemental materials on how to quote.

7.     Since your essay will be about two texts you’re reading, you will need to include an MLA-formatted Works Cited page as the last page of your essay that lists both sources. The child labor article has all of the publication information you need for your WC page, but the sibling violence article does not (use the separate publication information I’ve provided from the library’s databases).

·       Refer to and USE our supplemental materials on how to type up your WC page.

8.     Your rough draft will be shared with your workshop group and me.

9.     Your final draft will be submitted in Canvas as an “Assignment.”
