We discussed the concept of ‘pest’ as socially constructed, i.e. dependent on power dynamics and particular sociopolitical processes, in that case associated with settler colonialism. Rachel Carson describes the widespread use of pesticides (i.e. pest killers) in the 1940s-50s. Discuss several ways she criticizes prevailing definitions of pests in the use of toxic chemicals. Be sure to discuss the social and ecological factors contributing to particular definitions of pests, i.e. the factors helping explain why particular organisms get designated as targets for extermination. Explain different ways of thinking about unwanted organisms that might lead to better outcomes.
