The quiz is an open book and consists of only one question, which will require you to choose from a list of countries that underwent a democratic transition during the so-called “Third Wave” of democratisation (please see the list below). Your answers to the quiz question should be roughly 800 to 900 words. The question will upload 3 hours before the deadline, which means you have 3 hours to do so.
For your reference, here is the past quiz topic:
Choose a country that underwent a democratic transition (whether successful or not) during or after the so-called “third wave” of democratization (choose one from the list below). Then, apply a selection of the analytical tools we covered in Week 2 (rationalist, structuralist, culturalist approaches), Week 3 (identity and the struggle for recognition), Week 4 (state formation and nation-building processes), and/or Weeks 5-6 (democratization and de-democratization) to explain the success or the failure of the country’s democratization.
As for the contents of your answers, please note that the best essays will be those that both (i) show a good command of the course materials covered so far and (ii) demonstrate the capacity to apply general concepts/theories to the country you have selected. Beyond this, the highest grades will be reserved for those among you who make a serious attempt to assemble a well-supported original argument–one that is truly their own–in answering the essay question.
As mentioned, please see below for a list of countries that underwent a democratic transition during or after the so-called “Third Wave.” You may choose to write about any of the countries on the list.
