Pick a genre from popular culture in the US to research and analyze.

1). For the final paper, you must pick a genre of popular culture in the US.

2). Research and summarize the background for your selected genre.

3). Identify, describe, and analyze at least 3 examples from at least 2 different media (film, literature, music, fashion, theater, photography, food, etc.), while clearly identifying both the conventions and inventions of your examples.

The final paper needs to be  10 pages in double-spaced, 12-point font) plus separate works cited page.

These are 3 examples I have chosen in regards to point number 3 (above)

The Genre that I have selected is romance therefore it plays a role not only in film but also in literature and music. In regards to film, I have selected the example of the TV show Bachelor/Bachelorette. This show is related to the genre of romance because it shows us both a false and accurate portrayal of “love”. The Bachelor and Bachelorette are known to be circled around romance, roses, and drama but most importantly around women and men of all ages, races, and backgrounds. When it comes to romance films or romance movies it is mainly focused on the main characters’ passion, emotion, and affectionate romantic involvement, as well as the journey their love takes them through dating, courtship, and marriage. The bachelor not only does it focus on the main character but also on the 31 contestants’ journey to finding love. This show has been going on for 20 seasons and each season producers and directors display new things to relate to society and what society today values. Literature is another great example of how the genre of romance can be implemented. I’ve chosen the novel Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James. This book has become very controversial due to the fact that it talks about BDSM. For those who don’t know BDSM is a term for a sexual practice that includes bondage, discipline, submission, and masochism. Other than it being a book surrounded by sex and desire, I’ve chosen this as an example because it entails society to think of romance in a different light. Finally, as for music, I have chosen the example of the song “I am Her” by Shea Diamond. Shea Diamond is a transgender singer-songwriter who has written this song as a way for her listeners to learn to love themselves and also understand their identity. In her song, she uses the lyrics “Don’t care too much what other people see/I get along swell by my goddamn self” and she repeats the words “I Am Her” all throughout the song. She has publically come out and said that her song “‘I Am Her’ means that no matter how the world treats me, no matter if I’m rejected, accepted, denied, or misunderstood, I will continue to live out my truth as Shea Diamond!” (Shea Diamond).

these are some of the websites I used to find the information above, these do not need to be used… totally up to you.
