This assignment asks you to search for policy responses to the problem of the gender pay gap. You can use any sources you can find on-line, but please evaluate the source in terms of who is making the claim and the evidence they show to back up their policy solution(s). You might start with the course readings as well as references at the Economic Policy Institute and articles written for the Economist. Find at least two other articles in the popular press expressing opinions on the gender pay gap and what, if anything, to do about it. Your paper should have at least four sources Write a two page paper (single space, 12 point Times New Roman type, 1 inch margins) examining the policy arguments. Be sure to provide citations to your sources in the paper. Proofread you work. If you are uncertain about your writing you should visit the UMass Writing Center. You may ask the course TAs for clarification on this assignment ONLY up to 48 hours before the paper is due. The paper is worth 10 points and it should include the following sections: 1. An introduction that defines the scope of the problem. (2 points) 2. Your evaluation of the seriousness of this problem (2 points) 3. A description of the policy proposals that have been offered to reduce the gender pay gap (2 points) 4. An explanation of the policy proposals in terms of their reliance on direct experience, cultural beliefs, traditional authority, or expert scientific knowledge (2 points) 5. Which policy proposals to do you think are likely to be most effective? Why? (2 points); 6. Include a reference list of readings that you refer to in your paper or consulted in forming your opinion. Use a standard citation format (0 points, but you can lose up to 2 points if missing or incomplete).
