But that is never the case. When I teach Abnormal Psychology I tell my students that if you shake any family tree some nuts are going to fall out. That is a facetious way of letting them know that everyone is touched by the impact of our sinful, fallen world by having someone close to them suffer from some form of psychological disorder. From watching the videos and reading the textbook, you can see that psychological disorder encompasses a huge range of issues: from phobias, anxiety, and depression to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, from ADHD and autism to Mental retardation, from Alzheimer’s and other dementias to eating disorders and addictions. We all know someone affected, and typically their issues have had an influence on us.

In my own case, I have children with autoimmune disorders that have caused significant problems, including anxiety, depression, and even some OCD. It can be managed, but it has been difficult, both for them and for us. In the extended family, there has been Autism, Down’s syndrome, Dementia, Depression, and even some Personality Disorders and phobias. We all have that somewhere.

For this assignment, I would like you to discuss the impact of psychological disorders in your own extended family (Please do not share ANYTHING personal that you don’t feel comfortable sharing). I ask that you not use names or specific relationships; instead, refer to “someone close to me”, “someone I know”, or even “someone I care about”.

Talk about this in terms of the impact it has had on the individual and on the people closest to them that have to try and deal with it. For example, when my father’s dementia got so bad he couldn’t recognize a sandwich, he would get angry and lash out about people sneaking into his room and putting pictures of strangers on the wall to agitate him (they were photos of his children and grandchildren). That made it very difficult to come to see him when he couldn’t recognize you or would say hurtful things — you knew in your head it wasn’t really him anymore, but it would cause pain nonetheless.

For this assignment, please answer the following questions:

In what ways have psychological disorders influenced you or those close to you?

How has it impacted those affected?

How has it impacted the loved ones who had to deal with the ramifications?

What attempts at treatment or help have been tried? Successfully or unsuccessfully?

Watching the following videos can help you identify some of the many different issues that are considered under the umbrella of Abnormal Behavior:
