Implications of EM and Crisis Communication on a Historical Disaster

Choose a crisis that has been relevant to your life. You may choose any of the cases found in the required readings from this module, or you may select a different case that is particularly relevant to your life and experiences. For example, if you lived in Michigan, you might choose the Flint water crisis. If you are from Pennsylvania, you might choose the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. If you are particularly interested in racial tensions from media coverage, choose Hurricane Katrina. Or if you or someone you know participated in aid to post-nuclear Japan, choose that!

Prepare a two page reflection paper on this crisis. This paper may require some research, but the focus should be on the crisis and how it related to the learnings found in the required readings. Consider the following:

Provide background information on the crisis and why you chose this topic.

Offer insight into risk communication employed that effectively helped or hindered the population. Briefly analyze the three phases of crisis communication employed during the crisis.

Explain the implications of the communication plan from a multi-level perspective, including how the communication plan affected the organization as well as the public. (For example, in Hurricane Katrina, this would be FEMA, and in post-nuclear Japan, this would be TEPCO and the Japanese Government.)

Offer insight into how the communication plan affected the public in the long term.
