2) Is the topic of slavery evident in the letters and journals of the soldiers, both Confederate and Union, and does this support or contradict the author’s perspective? If the war was caused by slavery, was the idea of emancipation commonly supported by Union soldiers in 1861? What do these letters reflect about national opinion of the federal government?

3) For what other reasons, secondary or tertiary, did millions of men enlist in the war?

4) Most importantly, as students of history, why should we care about why they (the soldiers) fought? What importance in our study of the Constitution and the progress of our democracy does this topic have?

Address all four of these question in your discussion board, citing key pages in the text of the reader that describe evidence of your responses. Explain what you have observed and what the author has attempted to prove with ample evidence from the readings. Avoid imposing personal beliefs as we are looking to see how well we understand the book from what we have read.
