Describe the issue or gap you identified and are considering for your proposed informatics solution project. Explain how the organization is currently affected and what the informatics solution would change or improve.

During the early hours of preceptorship, while attending an upgrade implementation meeting, once the overall presentation was complete, it became painfully obvious that there needed to be additional engagement. Noticing that there was really only one super-user, or an identified Subject Matter Expert engaging with the IT implementation team, and the training team who were both presenting to the end-users, I noted the information and continued to observe. When I later rounded with the preceptor, when she asked what I thought about the kick-off meeting, I commented that engagement is so important. She asked me who I thought needed to be further engaged. I reported the observation that although the meeting was intended for the end-user, they didn’t seem very engaged in the meeting and it is concerning as it may be an indication of future engagement for the duration of the implementation. My preceptor agreed and said that at the end of the day, people really want to just be able to get the information documented in the system, see the patients and then go home. I agreed with her, but also acknowledged that this was a prime opportunity for the end-user to give meaningful input to identify significant opportunities to improve the system, since the implementation pertained to an upgrade of current functionality. I expressed my concern that this directly affects the ability to train the end-users, when their familiarity with the product is the bare minimum for the majority of the user-group, with only one or two savvy end-users, improvement is severely limited.
