You will prepare an assessment and evaluation program for your intended setting in
which you plan to practice counseling. (Youth boys ages 5 – 18 yrs old) Your paper will include the following information:
a. A brief description of the counselor you intend to become, the setting in which you
intend to work, the types of counseling services you intend to provide, and the
characteristics of the primary clientele to whom you intend to provide counseling
services, and the types of presenting problems that you expect to encounter.
b. Identify a minimum of five assessment instruments or strategies
that you would use in your personal assessment program. More would be better!
c. Your set of assessments must include representation of at least two of the five
major categories of assessments (i.e., intelligence, aptitude, achievement, interest, or
personality; do not include neuropsychological assessments).
d. Your assessments should also address at least two of the five purposes of
assessment in counseling (i.e., screening, identification/diagnosis, intervention planning,
progress evaluation, or outcome evaluation).
e. At least two instruments/strategies must be “informal” (e.g., unstructured
interviews, informal observation, projective drawings, checklists, work samples,
counselor-made tests, and questionnaires) and at least two instruments must be “formal”.
f. Include at least one outcome assessment (i.e., one that assesses the outcome of a
counseling intervention) applicable to clients in your setting.
g. Students should provide a rationale for selecting each assessment instrument. Include
the identifying data for each assessment (assessment name, author(s), publisher and
date of publication if applicable). Additionally, each of the five instruments or strategies
must be evaluated as to their appropriateness, making sure to address
psychometric (e.g., norm group, validity, reliability, scores) and practical/general
(e.g., purpose, features, cost, grade/age appropriate levels, administration time, level
of user competency) considerations.
