Dominicana by Angie Cruz
Although it’s fiction, the novel Dominicana by Angie Cruz tells a story of a young girl who unwillingly had to sacrifice her youth for her family. Throughout the novel, we will see the challenges she faced and how she has dealt with them. One significant factor in her life was a dictator named Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the Dominican Republic from the 1930s to -the 1960s. Trujillo was a ruthless leader, anyone who Opposed him was either killed or captured, or put in jail. Due to This event, Ana’s life was flipped upside down which caused her so much trauma and abuse at such an early age. In this paper, I will discuss how her being an undocumented woman growing up in an oppressive patriarchal society cause some women to do the unthinkable and stay in an abusive place until she finds independence, freedom, and self-love. This also reminded me of the novel YO by Julia Alvarez, where men thought it was okay to control a woman’s life and do as they please. Back then, women in society only had one role: being good wives and listening to their families. Which created toxic masculinity where men thought they had to be tough and dominate women with aggression and violence as a way of life.
