Using Theory to Explain Social Deviance

Positivistic theories might be useful in explaining why one becomes a gang member or an exotic dancer. Each of these is most likely to be perceived as deviant or through which deviance might occur. Choose either becoming/being a gang member or an exotic dancer. Then choose a social structural (SS) versus a socialization/social learning (SSL) approach to explaining this “deviance.” You will need to address/include at least the following:

  • A brief summary of your understanding of the SS or SSL approach you use. I do not want a quoting of the theory, but how you understand it. Somewhere in your discussion you should critique the usefulness or weakness of this theory to explain your deviance choice.
  • A brief description of the “deviance” you have chosen to explain – how is it that some or many perceive this as deviance? Here is where your additional source or sources will be useful.
  • Read and cite at least one additional peer-reviewed, sociological source that is not part of the required reading. You may use other sources as well as long as you cite your sources and be aware of the veracity of this source. I am looking for your understanding of the theory, not so much of the deviance per see, but your additional source should help with both. Your assignment should convince me that you understand the theory and that you have tried to apply it to understanding a positivistic explanation of social deviance – its strengths, limitations, questions raised, etc.
  • A likely length is 2-3 pages.
