2012 “Project Copycat” Department of Homeland Security

First, you must research the assigned case. This requires that you look at news articles, white papers (see Financial Agencies websites), and government sites for the case–if charged, prosecuted, found/pled guilty, and appealed then the case will be on FBI/DOJ sites.
Second, you must answer the following 5 questions:

  1. What was the crime? Provide a brief description that includes: a.) type of crime (select from our topics); b.) who committed the crime; and c.) when and where it took place.
  2. How was the fraud enacted?* Indicate methods of fraud performed and whether this crime was common or uncommonUse the research literature in the module to support your explanations.
  3. What contributing factors allowed this fraud to occur? *Indicate 1-2 factorsUse the research literature in the module to support your explanation.
  4. What investigative methods were used to gather evidence for this crime?*^ Be sure to analyze the steps that were taken in this investigation (e.g., tracing internet address to source) and whether each was effective in producing evidence needed for prosecution. Use the research literature in this or other modules  to support your explanation or find a peer-reviewed source.
  5. What can be done to prevent this crime?* Provide 1-2 measures that should be implemented.  Use the research literature in the module to support your explanation.
